Brief: Design a poster to advertise Typo: Cambridge’s upcoming conference, with one side advertising the poster’s general date and location, and the reverse listing the conference schedule.

Design Concept: Typo is a conference held in many different locations annually, so I wanted this poster design to recognize the special setting of that year’s conference – Cambridge, England. As such, I scoured the city to photograph examples of typography as a living artifact, and I landed on the background image of the main flyer. This photo is of the side of a building in downtown Cambridge where sign painters over the years have repeatedly made their mark, leaving layers of typography behind. The mix of modern, sans-serif lettering with more gothic styles is evocative of the nature of Cambridge as a city; incredibly historic yet at the fore of today’s latest and greatest ideas. I wanted the typography of my design itself to remain timeless and demonstrate the power of a limited range of typefaces and fonts for delineating hierarchical information.
